Non-resident foreigner identity number (NIE)

What is the non-resident foreigner identity number (Spanish acronym NIE)?

In general, the NIE number is something that identifies a foreigner in Spanish territory. This number is personal, unique, exclusive, and for life.

In that sense, the NIE for non-residents is granted to EU citizens or foreigners who in principle do not want to establish their residence in Spain but who need an NIE number to carry out some type of financial transaction or legal procedure in Spain.

What is the non-resident NIE for?

The non-resident NIE is required to carry out any of the usual activities that a resident would carry out in a country throughout their life, without the need to become a legal resident in Spain, such as:

  • Opening a bank account.
  • Renting or buying a second home in Spain.
  • Accepting an inheritance.
  • Establishing a company in Spain.
  • Buying a vehicle.

How does one obtain a non-resident NIE?

To request a NIE for non-residents, you must meet certain requirements and present the documentation listed below.

Can I work and reside in Spain with this type of NIE?

No, the non-resident NIE does not authorise you to reside or work legally in Spain.

This is a number that identifies you as a foreigner in the country (for example, for tax purposes).

What requirements must one meet to apply for a non-resident NIE?

The applicant cannot be in Spain illegally. The reasons for requesting said number must be disclosed.

Documentation

For the non-resident NIE to be assigned, the following documents must be provided:

  • Standard application form (EX-15) duly completed and signed.
  • Original and copy of the complete passport or identity document or travel document or valid registration card.
  • Disclosure of the financial, professional, or social causes that justify the request.
  • If applied for through a representative, the representative must prove that he or she has sufficient power to file said application (this must be expressly stated in the proof of power to represent).
  • Proof of payment of the corresponding fee (less than €10).

Where does one apply for a non-resident NIE?

If you are in Spain, you must apply at the corresponding General Directorate of Police. If you are in your country of origin, you must apply through the Spanish Diplomatic Mission or Consular Office located in your country of residence.

How long is the non-resident NIE valid for?

The non-resident NIE granted to individuals who do not reside in Spain consists of a document that expires after 3 months

After that period has passed –and if more procedures need to be carried out in Spain– the bearer must renew their NIE to be able to act legally.

However, this does not mean that a new NIE must be obtained. Instead, it means that the document is renewed with 3 more months of validity. The NIE number will remain the same for life
